5 Things to Know Before You Become a Pool Service Technician

Did you know that the average pool service technician makes a little over $45,000 each year? If you are thinking about becoming a pool tech, there are a few things to know before you get started.

You’ll want to know what you need to become a pool tech and how to find the right job in the industry.

1. Earn a High School Diploma or Obtain Your GED

Before you become a pool service technician, you need to obtain your high school diploma. 

The basic knowledge of chemical components and chemical treatments that you learn in high school will be applicable in this job setting. Having internship experience in high school is a way to get a leg up in the industry.

2. Earn a Pool Cert

You have the option to obtain a pool cert if you want to become a pool service technician. There are also options to get a pool cert that is specialized for specific applications. 

One reason for getting a Pool Certs would be to work as a Certified Pool & Spa Service Technician (CST).

While you don’t always need to have a pool cert, it can benefit you with your knowledge about water treatments, heating and cooling systems, and overall electrical maintenance. This knowledge will help you progress in your career.

3. Work With an Experienced Technician First

Before you go off on your own as a tech, it is always a great idea to work with an experienced technician to see how they do things.

You’ll be able to understand how technicians deal with issues, repair problems, and work with customers. You will also be able to see their everyday schedule to better understand what it would look like.

4. Seek Competitive Employment

Once you have experience with working with a technician in the field, have your Cert, and are ready to get a job, it is time to seek employment. Since you have gone through all of the steps to be the most advanced pool tech you could be, you should seek more competitive employment.

For more competitive employment, look at larger companies that have relationships with resorts, hotels, fitness facilities, and other entertainment places.

5. Progress to Your Own Company

Once you have the experience under your belt and enough years of gaining money through a decent salary, it may be time to consider starting your own company.

You will enjoy more flexibility and more freedom as your own boss!

If there are parts of the job that you don’t enjoy, like troubleshooting heater issues or operating the machinery for a dig operation for a future pool, you can pass that on to another employee.

Becoming a pool service technician can be a rewarding experience. Doing it the right way will also help you to go further with your career and potentially start your own company.
