How to Get Rid of Clutter in Your Home: 4 Easy Tips

Spring is here and the clutter from the past year is building up. When was the last time you saw the corners of your kitchen counter or the space under your bed?

It’s time to fix your cluttered house or apartment. Spring cleaning means it’s out with the old and in with the new.

If the idea of getting rid of clutter is stressing you out, we’re here with a few tips that can help. Read on to learn how to get rid of clutter fast.

1. Pre-Decluttering: Do You Use This?

When you know that you want to declutter your home, start paying more attention to what items you use and what items are just taking up space. This doesn’t apply to sentimental items. Instead, it can apply to kitchen gadgets, pots and pans, clothing, and other more “functional” items.

For example, if you’re decluttering your closet, pay attention to the clothes that you actually wear. When you wear something, put the hanger backward when you put it back in the closet. The items that never get turned around are things that you never use, so consider decluttering them (this doesn’t apply to seasonal clothing).

This is a great way to see if you’re holding onto something extra.

2. Have Somewhere for Discarded Things to Go

This is a big one: make sure that you have a place for the things that you’re removing from your home. If you don’t have adequate space for discarded items, they’re just going to work their way back into your clutter.

If you have a lot of things to throw away, consider renting a dumpster from a company like plummersdisposal.com. This way, you don’t have any excuse to keep things in your home.

Have plenty of garbage bags for trash and containers for items that you plan on donating.

3. Effectively Use Containers

Speaking of containers, using several containers (ideally boxes) is the best way to keep yourself on track when you’re decluttering. Label each container with:

  • Keep
  • Donate
  • Throw away
  • Wrong room (for misplaced items)
  • Fix or repurpose

Having these containers makes it far easier and quicker to go through your things without having to stop.

Items in good condition that you don’t plan on keeping should go into the “donate” box. Items in poor condition can go into the “throwaway” box or the “fix or repurpose” box if they have another use.

When you find an item that you plan on keeping, but that’s in the wrong room, throw it in the “wrong room” box so you don’t get distracted by getting up and going elsewhere.

4. Start Small

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when they’re decluttering is that they try to treat it like cleaning a house. They try to conquer the entire house at once.

When you do this, you give yourself more opportunities to get distracted. You’ll also feel like you’re not getting as much done. Think about how much better it feels to see a completely decluttered closet than slightly decluttered rooms.

Focus on one area at a time so you can see your results right away.
