Types of Pool Filters

Pool filters solve a simple problem. They catch dirt, debris, and other objects, as water passes through them. This prevents the accumulation of dirty items, creating and maintaining clean water.

There are three primary types of filters that are most commonly used. These include:

  • Sand Filters
  • De Filters
  • Cartridge Filters

There are differing opinions on which of these three filters does the best job regarding pool maintenance. However, pool sand filters are tried and true and are often more than enough for any pool.

Pool Sand Filter

Pool sand filters are simple in nature and require only a few pieces of equipment to get up and running. This includes a sand filter in a primary tank, a multiport valve, a backwater system, and input and output pipelines.

The filter function works as follows. First, water drains into the tank through an input tube, generally through a square hole in the side of the pool. This enters the tank, making contact with the sand filter system. As the water trickles to the bottom of the tank, the sand catches any macroparticles, like dirt, and keeps them in the tank.

Once the water reaches the bottom of the tank, it’s pumped through the output valve and back into the pool. Of course, the pool sand filter requires cleaning every once in a while. The cleaning process is simple and only involves using the backwash mode. This mode reverses the direction of the water filter process and pumps the water through the multiport valve and through a discharge hose outside of the pool.

Benefits of Pool Sand Filters

Pool sand filters are often considered the best choice for any pool, for a variety of reasons. First, they’re a very affordable option and require only a few basic materials to get started.

Second, they’re extremely easy to maintain, and only require a sand replacement every three to five years. Getting a sand filter replacement is easy, and you can click here for your first packs, or if you need a quick replacement.

Finally, they’re extremely effective. While alternatives, like cartridge filters, claim that they’re more efficient, the truth is that sand filters provide almost identical results.
