How to Design an Open Concept Kitchen

In 2020, the U.S. home remodeling market was worth more than $340 billion, and experts say the sector will be worth $456 billion by 2027.

A massive contribution to the market is kitchen remodeling.

If you’ve been thinking about a remodeling project, consider designing an open concept kitchen. An open-plan kitchen layout is all about providing space.

Whether you want space to hang out with your family, entertain guests, or just enjoy yourself, this kitchen design is great for all.

So keep reading as we get into how to design a kitchen with an open layout.

1. Choose Your Floor Plan

The first thing to think about is the floor plan you want your open kitchen to have. Some popular options include:

  • Single wall
  • L-shape
  • Peninsula
  • Island

The single-wall layout is the simplest option. It arranges the sink, countertops, and appliances on one wall. As a result, it’s an ideal layout for small spaces.

The L-shaped layout uses two walls instead of one. It naturally opens up to the surrounding rooms, making it a popular choice for an open concept kitchen. In addition, the L-shape helps create a specific cooking area, so the other rooms feel like their own space within the broader space.

The peninsula layout is similar to the L-shape, but it has an additional stretch of attached counter space on the third side (peninsula). The peninsula creates a soft divide between the kitchen and the remaining space while keeping the area open.

Another popular choice is to have an island. The kitchen is arranged along two or three walls with an island countertop in the middle. This floor plan easily opens into a living or dining area from the main entrance. It’s highly customizable, allowing for casual and/or formal seating, depending on your wants.

2. Let in the Light

The best open kitchens have plenty of natural light.

There are several ways to add more natural light, such as floor-to-ceiling windows, Crittall-style windows, or full-height sliding doors. You can also add skylights to the ceiling.

Natural light allows the space to feel and look bigger than it is, making it perfect for an open layout.

3. Create Zones

Without walls separating each room, use furniture to create zones and distinct spaces.

For example, position couches around a small table and face them away from the kitchen. You can also add casual seating to your island to draw those seated toward to kitchen.

Area rugs are great to help break up a big open room into different zones too. Color changes highlight different functions.

You can take this idea a step further and use different types of flooring throughout the space as well.
