Helpful Advice for a Low Maintenance Garden

Low Maintenance Garden

Whether you are a busy professional who barely finds enough time to balance personal duties and work commitments, or you are simply unable (either on a temporary or a permanent basis) to keep your front and back lawns looking good, then there is a solution.

The lower maintenance your garden and patio area, the easier it will be to ensure a tidy and well-kept aesthetic and so, with this in mind, continue reading for some helpful advice for a low maintenance garden.

Choose Sculptures Over Water Features

As beautiful and indeed, as relaxing, as water features are, they do come with a certain amount of upkeep and maintenance, which is not exactly ideal for your purposes.

Instead, consider creating a focal point with either a modern (or more traditional) sculpture—either on the side of the patio or indeed, in the garden amidst the flowers—for an entirely maintenance-free feature to make your garden stand out from the rest.

If you do have your heart set on a water feature, think small and manageable and install one on the patio, rather than at the far end of the garden.

Invest in Fences and Trellises Made From Composite Materials

Stunning and low fencing panels (and other impressively durable options from a company such as Ecomposite Products) provide both a sturdy and secure perimeter to the boundaries of your garden and patio and also the following benefits:

  • A high level of resistance against wind and stormy weather
  • Simple and easy maintenance
  • A stunning finished aesthetic
  • A dense and durable material
  • Exceedingly high water resistantance

Replace Overgrown Flower Beds with a Rock Garden

Not only are rock gardens a great and trouble-free way of injecting some year-round color and texture to your garden, but aside from sporadically replacing the pebbles and stones (should you want that vibrant white or cream), there is no upkeep whatsoever.

To prevent unwanted weeds sprouting all over the place, use a weed barrier, which is either placed on top of the soil underneath the pebbles or used as underlayment and serves to wash away even the slightest hint of weed seeds.

Introduce Faux Greenery

If your garden simply would not feel complete with a great deal of greenery and natural-looking elements, then instead of flower beds and borders that require a lot of upkeep and maintenance, instead look into realistic-looking and maintenance-free faux greenery.

This suggestion works especially well if you are working with a smaller space—and even more so if you have no lawn to speak of and instead have an intimate patio area; you could experiment with a faux living wall on the side of your house, for example.

Switch to Raised Flower Beds

Finally, if you are after that holy grail of low maintenance (yet natural) gardens, then you should definitely concentrate on elevated gardening.

Not only do raised flowerbeds and portable greenhouse trollies make for the perfect solution for gardeners who have trouble bending down repeatedly when tending to their flowers, but they will also contain your gardening work to a smaller, and therefore more manageable, space.
