Trending Internet Scams to Be Aware Of

We all think we’re bright enough to outsmart internet scammers.

But you might be surprised at how often seemingly innocent internet activity can expose you to cybercrime. In 2021, cybercriminals scooped up nearly $7 billion from innocent people.

Don’t assume you are immune to the risks of a modern scam. Use this guide to uncover the latest internet scams around right now.

Phishing

Phishing isn’t exclusively an online cyber scam, but it’s undoubtedly one of the most problematic security risks on the internet.

Phishing involves a scammer contacting you under pretenses, often claiming to be from a trusted source such as a bank or well-known brands like Amazon or eBay.

The most common form of these hacker scams is to scare you by suggesting that your account has a problem, such as a payment issue.

That often happens via email. That email will be a link for you to “fix” the problem, but clicking on the link will take you straight to the scammer’s website.

Most email platforms, such as Gmail, are improving their ability to spot scam emails. Fortunately, many typical phishing scams should end up straight in your spam folder.

But always be security-minded with an email from a company you know.

Check the email address and make sure it’s from the actual domain, and if in doubt, don’t click the link. Head straight to the website instead and get in touch with the customer service team directly for advice.

COVID-19 Scams

Criminals prey on people’s fears, so it’s predictable that COVID-19 crops up with growing frequency for a scam.

These cons vary. Some send information out via a fake health website to get your attention and click on a dangerous link. Others will try to sell counterfeit products as “cures” for COVID-19. These are modern versions of fake diet pills.

With anything health-related, avoid internet recommendations, primarily via email or ads. Always seek information via a trusted source of your doctor.

Fake Charity Scams

Crowdfunding for charity has become a modern phenomenon. But beware of fake sites asking for money for big relief disasters or wars (Ukraine is one recent example).

You may find these online scams floating around on social media with fake accounts from people claiming to need help. You might get a direct message from someone reaching out and asking you to donate to a charity.

Giving to charity is a noble tradition, but always donate your money to companies you know. Make sure you do your research first to determine whether that charity is part of an official charity commission.

Always ask questions before parting with money online and learn about cyber safety to know how to protect yourself.
